The composition of a sausage roll is sheets of puff pastry formed into tubes around our homemade sausage meat and glazed with egg before being baked. It is a savoury pastry snack. They can be served either hot or cold.
Early versions of the roll with pork as a filling proved popular in London during the Napoleonic Wars and it became identified as an English dish.
